Unlike traditional photonics devices, PPCS have the flexibility to change their structure and properties according to requirements to better suit a variety of photonics application scenarios. The programmable photonic chip is still in the early stage of development, and many universities and scientific research institutions are actively carrying out research work.

Last month, Spanish startup iPronics announced it began shipping its first batch of programmable photonic chips to customers in the European Union and the United States. The photonic technology company is developing programmable photonic computing chips, funded by the research and innovation activities of the Horizon Europe Research programme. (What is the European Horizon?)

The programmable C-band photonic chip designed by iPronics consists of 72 tuning units arranged in a hexagonal configuration and 64 input/output ports. Smartlight processors based on the chip can increase the processing power of different electronic devices, transferring data at the speed of light while significantly reducing power consumption.

Notably, the chip consumes 10 times less power than traditional electronic ics, while processing more information and working 20 times faster. The optical hardware of the chip can be programmed and configured through software to meet the needs of different applications.

The programmable nature of this technology opens up new commercial applications, with the ability to generate optical functions through software, significantly reducing time-to-market and the total cost of system design, prototyping, and production, and promising applications in a variety of fields, including optical computing, optical communications, lidar, biosensing, and quantum applications.

The commercial use of programmable photonic chip is also dependent on the help of design software. From chip layout design to function verification, professional optoelectronic chip design software is needed.

Luceda IPKISS optoelectronic design automation platform includes the whole process from device design to circuit verification, among which the two basic functions are integrated photonic circuit layout design and circuit simulation.
