1310/1550 Nm Dual-Wavelength Insertion Loss Instrument Probe Built-In
U8523A 1310/1550 nm dual light source back reflector/power meter is a desktop, LCD screen directly display, single light source outlet, measuring back loss, insertion loss and direct measurement of optical power instrument. It is suitable for the measurement of optical communication components, systems and connectors of optical fiber and cable.
The U8523A has a built-in 1310nm/1550nm wavelength light source and a built-in probe U88201 board in the chassis. An FC/APC ultra-low back reflection connector is integrated in the output port, and hybrid jumpers can be used to accommodate measurements of various connector types without affecting the return loss measurement range. When the device under test (DUT) is connected to the jumper DUT output terminal, the return loss of the device under test is displayed.

What is return loss?
When an optical fiber signal enters or leaves an optical device component (such as an optical fiber connector), discontinuity and impedance mismatch will result in reflected or echoed, reflected or returned signal power Loss, that is, Return loss, Return Loss (RL). Insertion loss is a measurement of the resulting signal value when the optical link encounters loss, while return loss is a measurement of the reflected signal loss value when the optical link encounters component access.
Calculation formula: RL=-10 lg (P0/P1), P0 indicates the reflected optical power, P1 indicates the input optical power.
The return loss value is expressed in dB and is usually negative, so the larger the return loss value, the better, with typical specifications ranging from -15 to -60 dB. According to industry standards, the return loss of Ultra PC polished fiber optic connectors should be greater than 50dB, and the return loss of oblique polished is usually greater than 60dB. The PC type must be greater than 40dB. For multimode fibers, the typical RL value is between 20 and 40 dB.
